"Avatar" becomes highest-grossing movie

Ci-fi spectacular "Avatar" has surpassed "Titanic" to become the highest-grossing movie worldwide, distributor 20th Century Fox said on Tuesday.

The worldwide total for the James Cameron movie stands at $1.859 billion after Monday's sales, beating the $1.843 billion haul racked up by "Titanic" in 1997-1998, said Greg Brilliant, spokesman for the News Corp-owned studio.

The data are not adjusted for inflation.

"Avatar" broke the seemingly insurmountable record set by "Titanic" in little over six weeks, handing Cameron the remarkable feat of directing the world's two biggest movies of all time.

It has reigned at the top of North American box office for six weeks. It has also led the field in France, China, Germany and Russia.

The action-adventure movie, starring Sigourney Weaver, is set in 2154 and tells the tale of a disabled ex-Marine sent to Earth to infiltrate a race of 10-foot (3-meter) blue aliens and persuade them to let his employer mine their homeland for natural resources.

The film took more than five years to make and was reportedly one of the most expensive films, with a budget of at least $300 million.

It has wowed both critics and fans, winning a Golden Globe last week. It is expected to garner an Oscar nomination next month.

Australia condemns Indian student death

Australia condemned on Monday the killing of an Indian student in Melbourne, as India called for an end to the spate of attacks against Indian students which has damaged Australia's multi-million dollar foreign student sector.

Accounting graduate Nitin Garg, 21, originally from the state of Punjab in northern India, was stabbed to death on Saturday night on his way to a job at a fast food outlet in Melbourne.

Police said the motive for the attack, which they described as vicious, was not known.

Indian media have labeled the series of attacks against Indian students in Australia as racist, but police and the Australian government have said the attacks are purely criminal.

"I obviously unreservedly condemn this attack," said Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

"This is a nation that welcomes international students. We want to make them welcome, this is a welcoming and accepting country," Gillard told reporters on Monday.

Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Sunday issued a statement condemning the "brutal attack," with Indian media reporting him warning the attacks were creating "deep anger" in India and could have a "bearing on bilateral ties."

"There is extreme shock and fear and anger," Gautam Gupta, president of the Federation of Indian Students of Australia, told local radio on Monday.

Australia's international student sector is the country's third largest export earner, behind coal and iron ore, totaling A$13 billion ($11.7 billion) in 2007-08.

Attacks against Indian students in 2009, mainly in Melbourne, led to violent protests by students and strained bilateral ties, prompting Gillard and other Australian ministers to visit India to assure that all was being done to stop the attacks.

Australian universities also sought to reassure students and their families that Australia was a safe place to study.

But a recent study forecast a 20 percent drop in Indian students in 2010, costing A$78 million, due to the attacks.

The study by The Tourism Forecasting Committee forecast 4,000 fewer Indian students, a fall of 21 percent compared with a 35 percent rise in 2009. Indian student numbers in Australia had risen at an average annual rate of around 41 percent since 2002.

In 2009, there were more than 70,000 Indians studying in Australia. Australia is a major destination for Indian students studying abroad, who recognize the cost competitiveness of Australian education services.

New Visa Rules Threaten UK English Language Schools

English as a second language is a thriving industry in the UK, with an estimate 600,000 students traveling to the UK each year to study. More than half of these also then go on to higher education courses – and for this reason the English Language industry brings in over £1.5bn to the British economy each year.

However, the booming industry has some major concerns regarding the new points based visa system. Brought into use back in April 2009, the new points based system was originally designed to close down bogus colleges and institutions – and for a large part the system succeeded. However there were still concerns that the system could be abused, and at the tail end of 2009, the UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown ordered a review of the system in order to tighten it up.

This review led to new proposals being put forward to raise both the level study and the standard of English for any applicant coming into the UK on the points based system. Although this new proposal will almost certainly remove further abuses of the system, it will also certainly exclude all students who want to come into the UK for six months or more to develop their English skills from a basic level.

Philip Hopkins, principal of the English Language Centre in Brighton, says that if the government’s proposals come into force, about 40% of the school’s business would be wiped out. “We are an educational charity founded in 1962 and many of the students we get for long-term courses are students who go on to a foundation, undergraduate or master’s programme and will be in the UK education system for the next four or five years.”

How to Get a Scholarship in 2010

Want to learn how to get a scholarship? Take your time to read this article and follow the links given!

There are many scholarships available than you may think. Scholarships differ from loans in that they offer free money. You can therefore expect stiff competition for most scholarships.

It is worth your time and effort to seek out the relevant scholarships and apply for them. Start looking for scholarships and grants months before you need them. If you are a postgraduate student, you can apply for fellowships which are scholarships for graduate students.

You also need to know what to expect from a scholarship when you apply for it. Some scholarships are fully funded, others are partial. Plan to wait for several weeks or months to find out whether you got the scholarship.

The best way to obtain a scholarship is to do a thorough research in this website. There is no short cut. You need to click on almost every link, read through and find out if you qualify. Apply for many scholarships; you can never apply for too many!

In the scholarships and grants section of this website, you will find many organizations, colleges and universities that offer scholarships. If you follow the links given, you will get their addresses and contact information.

All the scholarships in that section are offered annually. Some organizations may not have updated the website/application dates since the last deadline. They should answer you on any query in regard to this.

Each organization, college or university has its own criteria that a student must meet to be considered for the scholarship.

Once you have the contact information of the organizations, you must write to them and request an application. Some offer an online application. Ensure you send your request well ahead of the deadline.

This website has many different kinds of scholarships and grants. There are primary and secondary school scholarships, undergraduate scholarships and numerous postgraduate scholarships. Scholarships aimed at particular groups of people include scholarships for the disabled, scholarships for women, and scholarships for Muslims.

Specialized scholarships include amongst others, LL.M Scholarships, MBA scholarships, scholarships for refugees as well as PhD and masters by research scholarships. There are also travel grants and emergency student funds in UK.

Some scholarships are tenable for study in Africa. These can be used by students studying in their local African universities and colleges.

For undergraduate scholarships, Huygens scholarship programme is one of the most attractive. Huygens scholarship programme is also applicable to postgraduate masters students.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships are fully funded scholarships for masters’ students. They are easy to get and cover all courses at master’s level.

Every subject of PhD and masters by research study are covered by the Overseas Research Scholarships (ORS). All you need to do is locate a university in UK offering your area of study and apply for the ORS scholarship in that University.

Similarly, the New Zealand development Scholarships and Australian Development Scholarships cover all areas of study for PhD and Masters by research students who want to study in those countries.

Besides clicking on every link available in this website, another way to get your scholarship is to use the onsite Google search facility.

Commonwealth/DFID Shared Scholarship Scheme 2010

The Shared Scholarship Scheme is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID), and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the United Kingdom.

Information for UK Universities

UK Universities are invited to bid to joint-fund Shared Scholarships with the Commission. The next bidding round will be advertised at the end of March 2010 and a form will be made available then for bids to be submitted to the Commission.

Information for Prospective Scholars for 2010

How does the Scheme work?

Awards are for taught postgraduate courses only. All courses undertaken must be demonstrably relevant to the economic, social or technological development of the candidate's home country.

Awards are only available at participating institutions in the UK. The booklet giving details of the UK institutions offering Scholarships joint-funded with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in 2010 is available for download here or can be obtained in print copy from the Scheme Administrators (see below).

Booklet for 2010 Shared Scholarship Scheme (112 KB)
Please note that participating universities are required to support the student stipend for the award holder (at the rate set by the UK Government). The Commission funds the cost of tuition fees (at overseas rate), return airfares and other allowances. It is envisaged that around 170 Scholarships will be offered in 2010.

Who is eligible?

Applicants should:

a. be nationals of (or permanently domiciled in) a Commonwealth developing country, and not currently be living or studying in a developed country (please see the booklet for a list of eligible countries)
b. hold a first degree at either first or upper second class level;
c . be sufficiently fluent in English to pursue the course
d. have not previously studied for one year or more in a developed country
e. not be employed by a government department (at national level) or a parastatal organisation (employees of universities are normally acceptable, however)
f. be able to confirm in writing that neither they or their families would otherwise be able to pay for the proposed course of study
g. be willing to confirm that they will return to their home country as soon as their period of study is complete

How can I apply?

Most universities will handle advertising and recruitment directly and applications should therefore be addressed to the participating university direct (option 1). A few universities want all candidates for their Shared Scholarship courses to apply via the Electronic Application System (option 2). Following an option 1 university's closing date, the university will ask the candidates it selects to complete the CSC application form. Candidates should note that institutions are asked to forward their nominations to the CSC no later than 31 May 2010; where institutions have not specified a closing date candidates should contact the institution so as to ascertain the latest date that the institution is willing to accept applications.

Where can I get further information?

Although applications for specific courses should be addressed to the individual university concerned, general inquiries regarding the scheme should be sent to the scheme administrators at the address below. Please note that applications sent to this office will be disregarded and will not be passed on to the institutions.

Former Scholars' Views

Each year we carry out an anonymous survey of award holders. Here are some recent quotes on the relevance of the scheme:

"The course was a launching pad for my academic career and it did exactly that. I hope I can use my skills to turn around the education sector in my country. The scheme has definitely chipped into the forgotten area of professional/personal development which most African governments have ignored." (Education, Africa)

"The DFID scholarship has given me an opportunity not only to live and study in a new country but has also broadened my views and ideas. My course has benefited me to an extent which makes me feel I can use the expertise gained to enhance my career and for betterment of the environment." (Social Science, South Asia)

"This was a unique academic learning experience, meeting with and sharing ideas with people from all over the world and an exposure to advanced knowledge." (Social Science, South Asia)
